When I was approached to join the Surry Central Sports Information Department by Coach Wilmoth last semester, I thought to myself about how it might be a pretty cool thing to do. I didn’t think that this could become a serious group, but this visit to UNC-Charlotte convinced me that this is a viable program, and we at Surry Central are sitting on a potential game changer at the high school level. It will not only bring more interest to our athletic program, but it will also bring in well-needed revenue to the department. I realized that it wouldn’t be hard to have an up and running, full blown sports information department once we get all the bells and whistles straightened out. I appreciated the time the staff at UNC-Charlotte took out of their busy routines to help us, and the advice was very helpful. Maybe in the future we can collaborate and share ideas with other high schools as they try to start up a sports information department. It brings a whole new aspect to athletics as we know it to be; a different way to view games. I think if you love sports, and you devote a good deal of time to them, an interest in the information branch of athletics should come naturally. After seeing everything the Forty-Niners did today, it made me question why every high school in the state doesn’t already have a sports info department. We have a yearbook staff and a newspaper staff. Why not give students that are interested in this program the same option? That’s why I love to be a part of what we have started here, and it makes me even prouder to be a Golden Eagle. It will take the entire gang and maybe more to achieve greatness, but if we lay the building blocks and get this program up and running, this could be huge. Many thanks go out to Myles Wilmoth and Jeff Edmonds for this opportunity, and let’s keep the ball rolling.
